## ETIAS Launch Postponed
The European Union has postponed the launch of its European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), initially set for late 2026. This means that travelers from visa-exempt countries can continue visiting Europe without needing this new travel authorization.
## Current Status
The ETIAS system is not yet operational, and no applications are being accepted. The EU plans to inform travelers several months before the system becomes active. Until then, visitors can travel under existing rules, which allow short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in participating countries.
## Background and Future Plans
ETIAS was initially expected to be operational in 2021 but has faced multiple delays. The system, once launched, will require eligible travelers to obtain authorization online before their trip. This authorization will be linked to their passport and remain valid for three years or until the passport expires.
## Distinction from EES
ETIAS should not be confused with the Entry/Exit System (EES), which is already operational and records entry and exit data for non-EU nationals. EES involves biometric data collection at borders, while ETIAS will focus on pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors.
Travelers are advised not to apply for ETIAS through unofficial channels until the EU announces a new launch date.
