## Overview Lebanon's parliament has approved a significant amnesty law, the first since 1991, which could impact thousands of prisoners and individuals wanted by authorities. This legislation aims to address severe overcrowding in prisons, a situation exacerbated by prolonged detentions without trial.
## Details of the Law The amnesty covers crimes committed before March 2026, with certain exceptions. Notably, it excludes murder, terrorism, treason, espionage, and corruption-related offenses. However, it does reduce sentences for some serious crimes, including those facing the death penalty or life imprisonment, to 17 "prison years," equivalent to 12 years and nine months in Lebanon.
## Political and Sectarian Influences The law's passage is seen as a result of political bargaining among Lebanon's diverse sectarian groups. Each faction sought to secure the release of its affiliates, leading to criticisms that the law perpetuates a culture of impunity. Sunni Muslims, Hezbollah, and Christian parties all had specific demands regarding who should benefit from the amnesty.
## Criticism and Support Critics argue that the law lacks a broader vision for national reconciliation and fails to address underlying issues of accountability. They claim it is more about power-sharing than genuine social cohesion. However, supporters, including some lawmakers, view it as a step towards national healing and justice.
