## Eclipse Path and Visibility
A total solar eclipse swept across parts of Europe on August 12, 2026, casting a shadow from Iceland to northern Spain. This rare celestial event was the first of its kind visible in central and western Europe since 1999. The eclipse path included Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain, with the Moon completely covering the Sun for up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds, depending on the location.
## Weather Challenges
While millions gathered to witness the spectacle, weather conditions posed challenges. Clouds and rain obscured views in several areas, leaving some spectators unable to see the full eclipse. However, in Reykjavik, Iceland, observers reported an impressive experience despite the cloudy skies.
## Iceland's Unique Experience
In Iceland, the eclipse brought total darkness to Keflavik, southwest of Reykjavik, marking the first such event in the capital since 1433. Thousands of tourists and locals gathered to witness the phenomenon. The eclipse lasted longest over the cliffs of Latrabjarg, with a duration of about 2 minutes and 13 seconds.
## Tourism Impact
Iceland saw a significant influx of visitors, with around 75,000 foreign tourists in the country for the event. Hotels were fully booked, and Reykjavik became the most expensive destination to view the eclipse, with hotel rates averaging $1,012 per night.
## Future Eclipses
According to Icelandic astronomer Saevar Helgi Bragason, Iceland has experienced 12 total solar eclipses since its settlement around 870. The next total eclipse is not expected until 2196, with only eight more predicted between 2026 and 3000.
