How Abu Dhabi doctors solved a 40kg weight-loss mystery with robotic surgery

## Unraveling a Medical Puzzle

A 32-year-old patient in Abu Dhabi experienced severe abdominal pain, nausea, and significant weight loss, shedding over 40 kilograms. Despite numerous consultations, the cause remained elusive until the patient arrived at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC).

## Diagnosis of a Rare Condition

The medical team at SSMC, comprising experts from gastroenterology, vascular surgery, radiology, and robotic surgery, diagnosed the patient with Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS). This rare vascular disorder involves the compression of the celiac artery by a fibrous band near the diaphragm, leading to symptoms similar to common gastrointestinal issues.

## Precision Surgery

The patient underwent robotic-assisted surgery to release the median arcuate ligament. Led by Dr. Salem Al Harthi, the procedure was performed with high precision, minimizing surgical trauma and blood loss. This approach allowed for careful dissection around critical vascular and nerve structures.

## Successful Outcome

Post-surgery, the patient reported being pain-free and able to resume a normal diet. The symptoms of reflux, nausea, and excessive salivation also improved significantly, marking a successful resolution to the medical mystery.
