## Expanding Public Welfare
Punjab has launched a series of ambitious welfare programs under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who took office in February 2024. Key initiatives include the Suthra Punjab programme, which aims to enhance waste management across 36 districts using digital tools and a large workforce of sanitation workers. Additionally, the province is constructing the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research in Lahore, which is nearing completion and will be one of the largest public-sector cancer care facilities in Pakistan.
The government has also introduced financial support schemes for vulnerable groups. The Imam Masjid Honorarium Card provides monthly payments to imams, while the Rehmat Card offers financial aid to widows and orphans. Housing initiatives include interest-free loans for low-income families and the allocation of housing plots to those in need.
## Modernizing Infrastructure
Transport projects are underway in major cities, including the introduction of electric buses and the expansion of mass-transit systems. An e-taxi program with incentives for women drivers has also been launched. Women's protection centers and hostels are being developed to support working women.
In education and entrepreneurship, the government continues to distribute laptops, offer scholarships, and support small businesses. High-tech farming initiatives are also part of the modernization efforts.
## Cultural and Tourism Revitalization
Punjab is working to revive cultural events like Basant and plans to restore 170 historical sites, including religious landmarks. Anti-encroachment operations are being conducted to clear public spaces.
## Challenges and Criticism
Despite these efforts, the government faces criticism over the Punjab Defamation Law, expanded police powers, and concerns about public service quality. Opposition parties and rights groups have raised issues regarding transparency and accountability. The administration maintains that these reforms are part of a long-term strategy to modernize the province, with success depending on effective oversight and tangible benefits for citizens.
