## Incident Overview
A potential mid-air collision was narrowly avoided at Phoenix airport when two American Airlines jets were mistakenly assigned the same flight number, 2482. The situation unfolded shortly after midnight on Friday when a vigilant air traffic controller identified the error and took immediate action to prevent a disaster.
## Controller's Swift Response
The controller quickly distinguished between the two aircraft by referring to them as "American 2482 on the arrival" and "American 2482 on the departure." This ensured clear communication and maintained a safe distance between the planes. The arriving jet was kept above the departing one, and the departing plane was instructed not to climb too high, ensuring a safe gap between them.
## Expert Insights
Aviation safety expert Steve Arroyo suggested that the mix-up likely occurred due to a lapse in the airline's dispatch process. He noted that while such errors are rare, the system's resilience and the presence of safeguards helped avert a potential disaster.
## Investigation Underway
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and American Airlines are investigating the incident to understand how the error occurred. They have expressed relief that the situation was resolved safely, crediting the professionalism of the air traffic controllers and pilots involved.
