## Mission Overview
Japan is preparing to launch the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, targeting Mars' moons, Phobos and Deimos. The mission aims to collect samples to help understand the origins of the Solar System and potentially life on Earth. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch from Tanegashima Space Center in the near future.
## Mission Details
The MMX spacecraft will orbit Mars for about three years. It plans to land on Phobos to collect at least 10 grams of material. The mission will also involve the IDEFIX rover, which will conduct surface observations. Although the spacecraft will observe Deimos, it will not land there. The collected samples are expected to return to Earth by 2031.
## Scientific Goals
The mission seeks to determine whether Mars' moons were formed by a giant impact or captured as asteroids. This knowledge could reveal how habitable environments developed on terrestrial planets. The mission will also explore the potential of using Phobos as a "natural space station" for future manned missions to Mars.
## International Collaboration
MMX is a collaborative effort involving France's CNES, Germany's DLR, NASA, ESA, and various universities and tech companies. The mission's success could pave the way for future international space exploration initiatives.
## Challenges and Experience
Developing the spacecraft's landing legs posed challenges due to Phobos' low gravity. Japan's previous experience with sample return missions, such as Hayabusa-2, provides valuable insights for MMX. The mission also faces competition from China's Tianwen-3, which aims to return Mars samples by 2031.
