## Iran's Stance on Ceasefire
Iran has turned down a new temporary ceasefire with the United States, insisting instead on a permanent resolution to the ongoing conflict. This decision follows the expiration of a 60-day interim peace agreement without any significant progress.
## The Islamabad Memorandum
The interim agreement, known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, was signed on June 17 by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. It aimed to halt military operations and provided a two-month window to negotiate a final settlement addressing the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear activities, and sanctions.
## Stalemate and Accusations
As the agreement period ended on August 17, both nations accused each other of violations, and no extension was agreed upon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the document was meant to end the war, not just pause it. Meanwhile, Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the US lifts its naval blockade and sanctions.
## US Position
President Trump has stated that there are no ongoing or planned talks with Iran, maintaining that the US naval blockade is still in place and the strait remains open, contrary to Tehran’s claims.
## Impact on Oil Prices
The ongoing standoff has led to disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to a rise in global oil prices. Brent crude recently reached its highest level in over three weeks.
## Diplomatic Outlook
Analysts suggest that the current positions of both countries leave little room for immediate diplomatic solutions. Iran is unwilling to accept another temporary ceasefire, while the US seems to be seeking greater leverage through economic pressure before engaging in further negotiations.
