## Breakdown at Sea

The USS Benfold, a US Navy destroyer with approximately 300 sailors on board, experienced a significant power failure in the Pacific Ocean last month. The incident occurred on July 24 when the ship reported an engineering issue with its generators, resulting in a complete loss of power.

## Crew Challenges

For four days, the crew faced challenging conditions without access to drinking water, meals, functioning toilets, or air conditioning. Despite these hardships, the crew remained resilient and professional, according to Navy spokesman Cmdr. Matthew Comer.

## Assistance and Repairs

The USS Benfold received support from the George Washington carrier strike group, with the cruiser USS Robert Smalls providing meals. Eventually, the destroyer was towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines, arriving on July 28 for necessary repairs. The crew was accommodated with food and lodging off the ship during this period.

## Return to Service

Repairs were completed, and the USS Benfold departed from the Philippines on August 8, with all systems functioning normally. Meanwhile, the George Washington strike group, including the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, was seen heading towards the Middle East, expected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln.
