Rare Olive Ridley turtle nests in Abu Dhabi for the first time

## Historic Nesting Event

Abu Dhabi has recorded its first Olive Ridley turtle nest on Saadiyat Island, marking a significant milestone in marine conservation. This discovery adds a fourth turtle species to the emirate's waters, previously known for Hawksbill and Green turtles.

## Nesting Details

The Olive Ridley turtle laid 109 eggs on March 29, 2026. Volunteers from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) monitored the nest using solar-powered cameras. Hatchlings emerged on May 25, with 40 successfully reaching the sea, resulting in a 37% hatching success rate.

## Scientific Confirmation

DNA barcoding by EAD and Khalifa University confirmed the species as Olive Ridley, with a 99% genetic match. This is the first confirmed nesting of this species in Abu Dhabi, expanding knowledge of local marine biodiversity.

## Conservation Significance

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri of EAD highlighted the discovery's importance for understanding and conserving marine ecosystems. Olive Ridley turtles are classified as Vulnerable, and their presence in Abu Dhabi underscores the success of ongoing conservation efforts.

## Broader Context

The emirate has now recorded four of the world's seven marine turtle species. EAD's conservation program, including turtle rescue and satellite tracking, continues to protect these vital marine populations.
