## New Enforcement Measures
Starting August 24, 2026, India will enforce stricter rules on the number of SIM cards an individual can have. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will use a Digital Intelligence Platform to ensure compliance with the existing limit of nine SIM cards per person in most regions. In Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North-Eastern states, the limit is six.
## Impact on Mobile Users
Telecom operators must now verify if a customer has reached their SIM card limit before issuing a new one. Customers will need to disclose all mobile numbers registered in their name, even those with different operators. If someone exceeds the limit, they may need to surrender or disconnect some numbers.
## Government Monitoring
The government will use the Digital Intelligence Platform to cross-check subscriber information across networks. This aims to prevent individuals from bypassing the limit by switching operators. Subscribers can also use the Sanchar Saathi service to check and report unauthorized connections.
## What Users Should Do
Users with multiple mobile numbers should verify how many are registered in their name. It's advisable to disconnect any unused or unauthorized numbers. Before applying for a new SIM, ensure your total connections are within the allowed limit.
## Temporary Measures
If a SIM is issued beyond the limit, it may be temporarily suspended while the issue is resolved. Telecom operators have until November 30, 2026, to fully integrate with the Digital Intelligence Platform.
