14-year-old brings grandfather’s .357 revolver to school in Cebu

## Incident Overview

A 14-year-old student at Lut-od National High School in Pinamungajan, Cebu, was found with an unloaded .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum revolver in his bag during a surprise inspection on August 20. The discovery prompted the school to contact local police, who confirmed the firearm was not loaded.

## Investigation Details

Initial investigations revealed that the revolver belonged to the student's grandfather and was taken from a cabinet at their home in Barangay Lut-od. The student, whose parents work outside the municipality, is currently under the care of his grandparents. Following the incident, the student was handed over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.

## Security Measures

In response to the incident, Cebu Police Provincial Office Director PCOL Abubakar Udang Mangelen Jr. commended the school staff for their prompt action. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and announced plans to enhance police presence and coordination with schools across the province. This comes amid heightened security measures following a recent school shooting in Zamboanga.

## Government Response

Cebu Governor Pamela S. Baricuatro has instructed police to increase security at schools, implementing a one-police-to-school scheme. Authorities are also reminding gun owners to secure firearms, especially in homes with children. The case is still under investigation, with appropriate interventions being coordinated for the minor involved.
