UAE reaches 51% of target to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030

## UAE's Mangrove Planting Progress

The United Arab Emirates has successfully planted over half of its targeted 100 million mangrove trees, aiming for completion by 2030. This initiative is part of a broader effort to restore marine habitats and protect coastlines.

## Marine Conservation Efforts

The UAE's approach to marine conservation now includes restoring damaged ecosystems and enhancing their resilience to climate change. The country has increased its mangrove planting target from 30 million to 100 million trees, highlighting the importance of these coastal ecosystems.

## Expansion of Protected Areas

Currently, marine and coastal protected areas cover about 12% of the UAE's territory. The goal is to expand this to 30% by 2030, in line with the National Biodiversity Strategy 2031. The UAE has 16 protected areas, and efforts are underway to assess and expand these regions.

## Artificial Marine Habitats

Since 2016, the UAE has deployed nearly 23,000 artificial caves to create new marine habitats. These structures serve as breeding grounds for fish, supporting the sustainability of marine life and the fishing industry.

## Coral Restoration Projects

Coral reefs are another focus of the UAE's marine restoration efforts. A project in Fujairah aims to plant 1.5 million coral colonies over five years. Research has identified 210 coral locations, with over 55 species of hard coral recorded.

## Role of Fishermen

Fishermen play a crucial role in the UAE's marine policies, acting as "eyes of the environment" due to their daily presence at sea. The government collaborates with fishermen to discuss regulations and challenges, balancing fish stock protection with fishing livelihoods.

## Aquaculture and Regional Cooperation

Aquaculture is becoming a key component of the UAE's food security strategy, with 18 marine aquaculture farms currently operating. The UAE also emphasizes regional cooperation, recognizing that marine ecosystems and fish populations cross national borders, necessitating coordinated conservation efforts.
