## Tragic Airstrike in Sagaing Region
An airstrike by Myanmar's military targeted a monastery in Myaung township, Sagaing region, on August 21, 2026, resulting in the deaths of 14 civilians. The attack occurred during a meditation retreat for Buddhist Lent, a period when many older individuals gather for spiritual practices.
## Details of the Attack
The strike hit the monastery's meditation hall around 9:00 am local time. Among the victims were 11 men and three women, aged between 50 and 70. Witnesses, including pro-democracy rebels, reported that the attack was deliberate, not a mistaken target.
## Ongoing Conflict
This incident is part of the ongoing civil unrest in Myanmar, which intensified after the military coup in 2021. The coup ousted the elected government, leading to widespread conflict and accusations of human rights violations by the military. Recent reports by UN investigators have highlighted indiscriminate attacks on civilians by the military forces.
## Local Reactions
Local opposition fighters, who were present during the aftermath, confirmed that five of the deceased were from their village, while the remaining nine were from nearby areas. Efforts to rescue survivors were hampered by a second bombing run by military aircraft.
The Myanmar military has not yet commented on the incident.
