Thousands of healthcare workers create giant Onam Pookalam in Abu Dhabi

## A Floral Tribute to UAE's Resilience

In Abu Dhabi, over 1,000 healthcare professionals from Burjeel Medical City (BMC) collaborated to create a massive Onam Pookalam, a traditional floral carpet from Kerala. This year's design, spanning 250 square meters, features a portrait of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and a message of resilience: "The UAE is strong and resilient and emerging stronger."

## Symbolism and Unity

The Pookalam's design illustrates the UAE's journey from its heritage, represented by camel rides, to its modern advancements like the Etihad Rail. The floral artwork also includes themes of unity, healing, and compassion, reflecting the diverse group of healthcare workers from 35 nationalities who participated in its creation.

## A Celebration of Diversity

Ameera Al-Katheri, assistant director of nursing at BMC, emphasized the artwork's reflection of the UAE's multicultural society. Dr. Mujtaba Ali Khan, CEO of BMC, highlighted the Pookalam as a tribute to the UAE's strength and unity.

## Personal Connections to Resilience

For the healthcare workers involved, the theme of resilience resonates deeply. Dr. Malcolm Borg, a consultant in emergency medicine, noted that resilience is a daily reality in their field, making the Pookalam's message particularly meaningful.

## Annual Tradition

The giant Pookalam has become a key feature of BMC's Onam celebrations, each year adopting a theme that aligns with the UAE's values and aspirations. This year's floral display not only celebrates Onam but also serves as a vibrant representation of a nation looking forward while honoring its roots.
