## A Sanctuary for Gibbons

Located near Los Angeles, the Gibbon Conservation Center has been a haven for endangered gibbons for 50 years. Established in 1976 by Alan Mootnick, a self-taught primatologist, the center has evolved into a renowned institution dedicated to the care and study of these rare primates.

## Unique Characteristics

Gibbons are known for their distinctive singing, which can be heard from a mile away. The center currently houses around 40 gibbons across five different species, each contributing to the center's vibrant soundscape.

## Leadership and Legacy

After Mootnick's passing in 2011, Gabi Skollar took over as director. Originally from Hungary, Skollar moved to the US in 2005 to learn from Mootnick and has continued his mission of conservation and education.

The center not only provides a safe environment for gibbons but also plays a significant role in global research and conservation efforts. With gibbons facing increasing threats from habitat loss and illegal trade, the center's work is more crucial than ever.
