## US Delists Syria as Terrorism Sponsor
The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, a designation that had been in place for decades. This decision, announced on Monday, aims to encourage investment and enhance political and economic stability in the region.
## Sanctions Relief and Economic Impact
Following the delisting, the US Treasury Department has lifted certain sanctions, aligning with President Trump's commitment to provide sanctions relief to Syria. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that these actions are intended to foster investment in Syria, although the US remains committed to countering global terrorism.
## Changes in Terrorist Designations
In addition to Syria's removal from the terrorism list, the US has also revoked the designation of the al-Nusrah Front, now known as Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), as a global terrorist organization. HTS, which was once affiliated with Al-Qaeda, severed ties with the group in 2016 and has since attempted to reshape its image.
## Political Context
The decision to delist Syria follows an earlier announcement in July and is seen as a gesture of support for Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. Sharaa, a former jihadist, has been working to position himself as a unifying leader after the fall of the Assad regime in 2024. The move coincided with a meeting between President Trump and Sharaa during a NATO summit in Turkey.
