## Apple Upgrade Program Overview
Apple has launched a new leasing service called Apple Upgrade in the United States, replacing the previous iPhone Upgrade Program. This new initiative allows customers to lease various Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, with options to upgrade, purchase, or return the device at the end of the lease term.
## Leasing Details
The program offers flexible leasing terms: 12 or 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches, and 24 or 36 months for Macs and iPads. Monthly payments start at $17.99 for iPhones, $11.99 for Apple Watches and iPads, and $24.99 for Macs. Customers can trade in existing devices to lower these costs.
## Exclusions and Additional Options
AppleCare+ is not included in the monthly payments, allowing customers to choose whether to add coverage for accidental damage or extended service. The program focuses on premium devices, excluding lower-priced models like the Apple Watch SE and entry-level iPads.
## Strategic Shift
This move aligns with Apple's broader strategy of shifting from one-time purchases to recurring revenue models, similar to its services like Apple Music and iCloud+. By leasing devices, Apple aims to maintain a predictable upgrade cycle and potentially refurbish and resell returned devices.
## Financial Considerations
The program is powered by Klarna, which manages the financing aspect. Customers undergo a soft credit check before leasing. While leasing may benefit those who frequently upgrade devices, buying outright might still be more economical for those who keep their devices longer.
