Home Services Understanding Mainland Business Setup in the UAE

What is Mainland?

Mainland is a local company registered directly through the Emirate's government authorities, without the involvement of a free economic zone (free zone).

Sounds strict? In practice, it's the opposite. This is the most flexible business registration format in the UAE today.

You get:

  • direct interaction with the government, without intermediaries;
  • quick document processing and license renewal;
  • freedom to choose an office, employee, service — within the entire Emirate.

What is the difference between Mainland and a free zone?

A free zone is a restricted area where you can start a business quickly, but:

❌ you cannot freely operate outside the zone

❌ less trust from banks

❌ more difficult compliance and expansion

A Mainland company is:

✅ Operating throughout the entire Emirate

✅ Easier to open a bank account

✅ Processes are transparent and predictable

✅ Opportunity to grow and scale

Is a local partner needed?

Good news: in most cases — no!

Previously, registering Mainland companies required mandatory partnership with a UAE citizen. Today, this requirement has been removed for almost 98% of activities.

You can own 100% of the company and still develop a business in one of the most stable and fastest-growing economies in the world.

Features in different Emirates

Each Emirate in the UAE has its own registration features:

  • Within the Emirate — complete freedom of movement (offices, addresses, business activity).
  • To enter another Emirate (e.g., from Dubai to Abu Dhabi) — you will need to open a branch or subsidiary.

And we help plan an expansion strategy to avoid double costs and delays.

Legislation and bank trust

Registering a company in the Mainland format means you operate under UAE federal laws. This is important. Especially when opening a bank account, obtaining licenses, or certifications.

Banks in the Emirates are more willing to work with Mainland companies because they trust their format and legal basis.
