How Sharmila Dhankar overcame polio and domestic abuse to win CWG gold

## Overcoming Early Challenges

Sharmila Dhankar, hailing from Chhithroli village in Haryana, faced significant challenges from a young age. At two, she contracted polio, which left her with a disability. Her early life was further marred by domestic abuse after marrying at 19. Her first husband subjected her to severe mistreatment, culminating in a traumatic incident where she and her daughters were thrown out of their home.

## A New Beginning

After this ordeal, Sharmila's parents took her back, providing a foundation for her to rebuild her life. Six years later, she remarried Ajit Singh, whose support was pivotal. Ajit introduced her to sports, encouraging her to pursue para athletics despite her lack of experience and physical challenges.

## Journey to Success

Sharmila's journey in para athletics began in 2020. Within a year, she became a national champion and set a new national record in Dubai. Her dedication paid off at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she won gold in the F57 shot put with a throw of 9.81 meters, ending India's 20-year wait for a para athletics gold medal.

## A Symbol of Resilience

For Sharmila, the gold medal represents more than athletic achievement; it is a testament to her resilience and determination to overcome adversity. Her story is an inspiration, not just for her daughters, whom she hopes will also compete in future games, but for all women facing similar struggles.
