## Introduction of CKYC 2.0
India is set to launch an upgraded Central Know Your Customer (CKYC) system in August 2026, aiming to streamline identity verification for non-resident Indians (NRIs) in the UAE. This initiative is expected to reduce the need for repetitive KYC checks when NRIs open or update financial accounts in India.
## How CKYC 2.0 Works
The new system will allow financial institutions to access a customer's verified identity from a central registry, provided they have the customer's consent. This means NRIs will no longer need to repeatedly submit documents like passports and address proofs to different banks and investment firms.
## Phased Rollout
The rollout will begin with banks and insurance companies, followed by mutual funds and brokerages later in 2026. This phased approach aims to ensure a smooth transition across various financial sectors.
## Benefits for NRIs
NRIs often maintain multiple financial relationships in India, requiring them to undergo KYC processes with each provider. CKYC 2.0 will enable them to complete the KYC process once, allowing authorized institutions to access their verified records, thus simplifying compliance.
## Regulatory Involvement
The Reserve Bank of India, along with other regulatory bodies, is involved in the project. Protean eGov Technologies is tasked with developing the upgraded platform, which aims to improve data accuracy and reduce duplicate entries.
## Future Implications
The UAE is also considering a similar eKYC platform, which could benefit from India's CKYC model. This could lead to reduced duplication and more efficient compliance processes in the UAE, enhancing the ease of doing business.
