Mountaineering legend Nirmal Purja dies in Pakistan's Broad Peak avalanche

## Tragic Loss on Broad Peak

Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, a British-Nepali climber, tragically lost his life in an avalanche on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan. The incident occurred during an expedition led by Purja, who was 43 years old. The avalanche struck on Thursday, cutting off contact with the team.

## Search and Recovery Efforts

Rescue teams recovered the bodies of three climbers from the 10-member expedition. The deceased included an American woman, an Omani woman, and a Nepali man. The remains were transported by helicopter for formal identification. The search operation, involving high-altitude porters and military helicopters, faced challenging weather conditions.

## Purja's Legacy

Nirmal Purja was celebrated for his record-breaking achievements in mountaineering. Before becoming a full-time climber, he served with Britain's Brigade of Gurkhas and the Royal Marines' Special Boat Squadron. Purja was known for climbing all 14 of the world's highest peaks in just over six months in 2019, a record at the time.

## Condolences and Impact

Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed condolences, highlighting the shock and sadness felt by the mountaineering community.
