## Complex Surgery on Premature Infant
American Hospital Dubai recently conducted a rare and life-saving surgery on a premature baby born with a unique urinary tract condition. The infant, delivered at 35 weeks and weighing 2.3 kg, was diagnosed with bilateral hydronephrosis due to a blocked urinary tract, which could have led to permanent kidney damage if untreated.
## Immediate Medical Intervention
Upon birth, the baby was transferred to the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for stabilization. Dr. Ahmad Alsweed, a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, performed an initial procedure to clear the urinary tract obstruction. The hospital's neonatologists, Dr. Sridhar M. Ramaiah and Dr. Osama Hamud, worked to correct the baby's electrolyte imbalance, improving kidney function.
## Advanced Diagnostic Procedures
Further investigations revealed an anterior urethral valve (AUV), a rare congenital condition affecting urine flow. On the 12th day, a Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) was performed, an advanced imaging test that identified the obstruction.
## Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Alsweed then conducted a minimally invasive cystoscopy, using a tiny camera and laser to remove the tissue causing the blockage. This procedure avoided the need for open surgery.
## Successful Outcome
After 24 days in the NICU, the baby was discharged in excellent health, with normal kidney function and feeding well. This case highlights the hospital's expertise in handling complex neonatal conditions through early diagnosis and advanced surgical techniques.
