Air India flight delay: How Kerala man won ₹136,000 compensation after 9-year legal battle

## Legal Victory After Long Battle

A Kerala resident, Kapildev, secured a compensation of ₹136,000 from Air India following a nine-year legal struggle. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Thiruvananthapuram ruled in his favor due to a flight delay that disrupted his travel plans.

## Incident Details

In September 2017, Kapildev, a driver in Saudi Arabia, faced a significant delay on his Air India flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai. This delay caused him to miss his connecting flight to Saudi Arabia, leaving him stranded overnight at Mumbai airport.

## Financial and Emotional Impact

The delay forced Kapildev to purchase a new ticket for approximately ₹49,000, adding to his financial burden. He reported a total loss of around ₹83,000, including the cost of the unused ticket. Additionally, he claimed that Air India did not offer adequate assistance or accommodation during his wait.

## Air India's Defense

Air India attributed the delay to the late arrival of the incoming aircraft and stated they attempted to contact passengers and provide refreshments. However, the commission found the airline's evidence insufficient to justify the delay.

## Commission's Decision

The commission ordered Air India to compensate Kapildev ₹83,000 for financial losses, ₹50,000 for mental distress, and ₹3,000 for legal expenses, totaling ₹136,000. Kapildev emphasized the importance of holding airlines accountable for service disruptions, highlighting passengers' rights to seek legal recourse.
