## Supreme Court Decision
On August 5, the Philippine Supreme Court dismissed petitions challenging the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. The court ruled that the issues raised were moot since the case had already progressed to the Senate.
## Petitions Dismissed
Two petitions were dismissed: one filed by Duterte herself and another by lawyer Israelito Torreon and others. These petitions questioned the actions of the House of Representatives and its Committee on Justice during the impeachment process.
## House of Representatives' Role
The Supreme Court explained that the House had completed its constitutional role by approving and transmitting the articles of impeachment to the Senate. Thus, any actions the petitioners wanted to stop had already been executed.
## Focus on House Committee
The petitions argued that the House Committee on Justice overstepped its authority by gathering evidence and compelling witnesses before determining the sufficiency of the complaints. However, the court did not address these arguments, as the impeachment process had already moved forward.
## Senate Proceedings
With the case now in the Senate, the impeachment proceedings continue. The Senate has convened as an impeachment court to hear the case and will eventually decide on Duterte's acquittal or conviction.
## No Exceptions Applied
The Supreme Court noted that it could decide on moot cases under exceptional circumstances, but found no such exceptions applied to these petitions. As a result, both were dismissed, allowing the impeachment process to proceed without legal hindrance.
