The outbreak is believed to be connected to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell, with Taylor Farms identified as the supplier. The company has recalled lettuce grown in central Mexico. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of contamination.

Dr. Juan Luis Marquez, a public health expert, highlights the difficulties in managing cyclospora outbreaks. The parasite can take weeks to cause symptoms, complicating efforts to trace its source. Additionally, reduced public health staffing has hindered response capabilities.

## Health Impact

Cyclospora is a parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, characterized by severe diarrhea. This year, the U.S. has seen over 25,000 cases, surpassing previous records. Michigan alone has reported more than 12,000 cases, including two fatalities.

## Ongoing Concerns

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is monitoring five separate cyclospora outbreaks, with the iceberg lettuce-related outbreak being the largest. No specific products have been linked to the other outbreaks, which include one affecting 115 individuals.
