## Conviction Details
The Bombay High Court has convicted former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal of rape, overturning a previous acquittal from 2021. The court found him guilty of multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code, including rape and sexual harassment.
## Background of the Case
The case dates back to November 2013 when a junior colleague accused Tejpal of sexual assault in an elevator at a Goa hotel. Following the allegations, Tejpal was arrested after his anticipatory bail was denied, but he was later granted regular bail by the Supreme Court in 2014.
## Previous Acquittal
In May 2021, a sessions court in Mapusa acquitted Tejpal, citing insufficient evidence and investigative lapses, such as missing CCTV footage. The Goa government appealed this decision, leading to the recent High Court ruling.
## Court Proceedings
During the High Court hearings, the prosecution argued that the trial court had overlooked crucial evidence, including an apology email from Tejpal. The defense requested a suspension of the conviction to allow time for an appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that Tejpal had no other criminal cases against him.
## Sentencing
The High Court is set to decide on the sentence later today. The prosecution emphasized the need for a strong message against sexual violence, while Tejpal's defense sought leniency, claiming he was a victim in this situation.
