## Iran's Conditions for Strait of Hormuz Reopening
Iran has clarified that its recent maritime agreement with Oman will not automatically lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping. Tehran insists that the United States must first meet specific political and economic conditions.
## US Sanctions and Trust Issues
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi emphasized that the Iran-Oman deal is only a framework for managing vessel movements, not a decision to restore unrestricted shipping. Tehran demands the lifting of US sanctions, particularly those affecting its oil sector, and the resumption of negotiations over frozen Iranian assets.
## New Maritime Model
The Iran-Oman arrangement is described as a new model reflecting current security needs, rather than a continuation of past agreements. Under this plan, commercial shipping would transit through both Iranian and Omani waters, showcasing Iran's strategy of "effective sovereignty" over the strait.
## Opposition to Shipping Fees
Global shipping organizations have expressed concern over Iran's proposal to impose fees for maritime services in the strait. They argue that such charges could set a dangerous precedent, increase transport costs, and impact global energy prices. The United States and several Gulf states oppose these fees, advocating for free passage in international waterways.
