Gaza beekeeper keeps hope alive on rooftop amid ruins of war

## A Rooftop Sanctuary

In the war-torn landscape of Gaza City, Ibrahim Al Dabba, head of the Beekeepers Cooperative, tends to his bees on a rooftop in the Tel Al Hawa neighborhood. This unusual setting for an apiary is a result of the destruction caused by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

## Beekeeping Sector Devastated

Before the war erupted in October 2023, Gaza's beekeeping industry thrived with over 40,000 hives and 450 beekeepers. The conflict has since decimated the sector by more than 95%, as many hives were located near border areas that became inaccessible.

## Challenges and Adaptation

Al Dabba lost around 400 hives and was forced to relocate the remaining 35 to a residential rooftop. Despite the challenges, he finds solace in the bees' ability to adapt to their new environment, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation.

## Humanitarian Struggles

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with many residents living in tents and facing restrictions on essential supplies. Al Dabba struggles to obtain necessary beekeeping equipment due to import restrictions, yet remains hopeful for a future of peace and stability.
