## Origins of the Perseids
The Perseid meteor shower occurs every August as Earth passes through debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. This comet, which orbits the sun every 133 years, last visited the inner solar system in 1992 and won't return until 2126. Despite this, the meteor shower is an annual event because Earth crosses the comet's debris trail each year.
## How It Happens
When Swift-Tuttle nears the sun, it sheds dust and ice, leaving a trail that remains in space. Earth intersects this trail at the same time every year, creating the meteor shower. The particles, mostly tiny and fragile, burn up in Earth's atmosphere, creating visible streaks of light.
## Viewing Tips
The meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, but they can be seen across the sky. For the best view, find a dark location away from city lights and look up between midnight and 4am. This year, the peak occurs on the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13, coinciding with a new moon, which enhances visibility.
## Historical Context
Historically, the Perseids were known as the "tears of St Lawrence," named after a Christian martyr whose feast day falls on August 10. Medieval observers noted the shower's reliability long before the comet's existence was known.
## 2026 Viewing Conditions
This year's conditions are particularly favorable, with no moonlight to obscure the view. Observers might see up to 100 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. Additionally, a planetary lineup featuring Saturn and Mars adds to the celestial display.
