## Major Earthquake Strikes Colombia

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 hit western Colombia on Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 111 people. The epicenter was located in the Chocó region, about 400 kilometers west of Bogotá. This is the strongest earthquake Colombia has experienced in over a decade, according to the Colombian Geological Service.

## Widespread Damage and Response

The quake caused significant destruction across more than 20 municipalities, including Pereira, Quibdó, Cali, and Manizales. In Manizales, part of a historic cathedral collapsed, and several buildings in Cali also suffered severe damage, trapping people inside. Airports in five cities remain closed to regular flights, being used only for emergency operations.

## International Support and Aftershocks

The UAE and other international leaders have pledged support to Colombia. El Salvador, Ecuador, Mexico, and the United States have offered assistance, including rescue teams and medical supplies. The European Union has mobilized its satellite service to aid rescue efforts. Aftershocks measuring 2.8 and 4.8 have been recorded, and authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage, especially in remote areas.

## Local Reactions and Safety Concerns

Residents in affected areas, like Angelica Avila in Manizales, described scenes of panic and destruction. Many are hesitant to return to damaged buildings, fearing further collapses. Colombian singer Shakira expressed solidarity with those affected, urging unity and adherence to official guidance during this crisis.
