## Mohsen Rezaei's New Role
Mohsen Rezaei, a prominent figure in Iran's political and military landscape, has been appointed as the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC). This council is crucial in shaping Iran's security and foreign policy. Rezaei, 71, is a veteran of Iran's political establishment and a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
## Controversial Past
Rezaei is known for his hardline stance against the United States. In a 2015 interview, he threatened to capture 1,000 Americans if the US took military action against Iran. He is also wanted by Interpol in connection with the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, which resulted in 85 deaths. Despite these controversies, Rezaei has held various political roles, including as a military adviser to Iran's new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
## Strategic Implications
Rezaei's appointment signals a continuation of Iran's hardline policies, especially amid ongoing tensions with the US and Israel. His role in the SNSC places him at the center of Iran's strategic decision-making during a volatile period. The appointment is seen as reinforcing the influence of Iran's old-guard security establishment.
## Broader Military Changes
In addition to Rezaei's new position, Revolutionary Guards General Ali Abdollahi has been appointed as the head of Iran's armed forces. These appointments are part of a broader military reshuffle under Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed leadership following the death of his father earlier this year.
