NCERT halts Class 8 textbook distribution over judiciary chapter error

## Distribution Halted

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has paused the distribution of its new Class 8 Social Science textbook due to an error in Chapter 4, "The Role of Judiciary in our Society." This chapter, spanning pages 125 to 142, contained inappropriate material that was unintentionally included.

## Official Release and Immediate Concerns

The textbook, titled "Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Volume II," was officially released on February 24, 2026. However, shortly after its release, concerns were raised about the content related to the judiciary's role and functioning in India. The Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education instructed NCERT to halt distribution until the content is reviewed and corrected.

## NCERT's Response

NCERT has expressed regret for the oversight and confirmed compliance with the ministry's directive to stop distribution. They have committed to revising the chapter with input from academic authorities and subject experts to ensure it aligns with constitutional principles.

## Future Measures

The revised textbook is expected to be available before the 2026–27 academic session. This incident has sparked discussions on improving quality control and editorial review processes in textbook preparation. NCERT has assured that additional safeguards will be implemented to prevent similar issues in the future.
