Meta to pay up to $16.68b to settle child harm claims, sets new limits for teenage users

## Settlement Details

Meta Platforms has agreed to a settlement of up to $16.68 billion to resolve claims that its platforms, Facebook and Instagram, harmed young users and mishandled children's data. This settlement was reached during a federal trial in California involving 29 U.S. states.

## Allegations and Legal Proceedings

The legal action combined allegations from several states, including California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, which accused Meta of violating consumer protection laws. The states claimed that Meta designed features encouraging prolonged use by young people and misled users about safety. Additionally, Meta was accused of violating the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting data from users under 13 without parental consent.

## Meta's Response and Changes

Meta has denied any wrongdoing but has agreed to implement changes for teenage users on its platforms. These changes include daily usage limits and nighttime restrictions. Despite the settlement, Meta plans to appeal other recent decisions against it, including a New Mexico jury's order to pay $375 million for misleading consumers about platform safety.

## Ongoing Legal Challenges

While this settlement addresses claims in the California trial, Meta and other social media companies like Snap, YouTube, and TikTok still face numerous lawsuits. These cases, brought by individuals, families, and school districts, allege that the platforms contributed to mental health issues among young users. Thousands of lawsuits are pending in both federal and state courts across the U.S.
