## Trial Date Set for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged architect behind the September 11 attacks, is scheduled to face trial at Guantanamo Bay in June 2028. This decision comes nearly 27 years after the tragic events that claimed almost 3,000 lives.
## Long Road to Trial
Mohammed, captured in 2003, has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2006. His trial has faced numerous delays due to legal disputes over evidence and interrogation methods used during his detention. The trial date was set by Military Judge Lt. Col. Michael Schrama, who rejected an earlier proposal for a 2027 start.
## Legal Challenges
The case has been complicated by issues surrounding the admissibility of evidence obtained during Mohammed's detention, where he was subjected to harsh interrogation techniques. These methods have been central to ongoing legal debates.
## Co-Defendants and Charges
Mohammed will be tried alongside three alleged co-conspirators. A fourth defendant was deemed mentally unfit for trial. The prosecution is seeking the death penalty for Mohammed and his co-defendants.
## Uncertain Future
Despite the trial date, significant legal hurdles remain, including disputes over classified information and evidence reliability. The trial's outcome remains uncertain, reflecting the complex legal landscape following the 9/11 attacks.
