## Deadly Wildfires Sweep Northern Algeria

Algeria is grappling with devastating wildfires that have claimed 12 lives as they rage across the northeastern regions. The fires, fueled by an intense heatwave, have spread rapidly, affecting multiple provinces.

## Impacted Areas and Casualties

The provinces of Jijel, Béjaïa, and Tizi Ouzou have been the hardest hit, with five, four, and three fatalities respectively. In addition to the fatalities, 54 individuals have suffered burn injuries, with six in critical condition.

## Firefighting Efforts

Algeria's Civil Protection services reported 154 vegetation fires nationwide on Wednesday. Emergency crews are actively working to contain the blazes and protect residents. Béjaïa alone reported 36 fires, with 18 under control by Wednesday evening.

## Historical Context

This is not the first time Algeria has faced such disasters. In previous years, wildfires have resulted in significant loss of life and property, particularly in the Kabylie region and El Tarf.

## Ongoing Challenges

The current fires coincide with a severe heatwave affecting North Africa, exacerbating the situation. Authorities are focused on firefighting, evacuations, and medical care, while investigations into the causes of the fires are ongoing.
