What experts know so far about Nepal's deadly floods

## Overview

A catastrophic flood and landslide event has devastated areas along the Nepal-Tibet border, resulting in at least 165 fatalities. The disaster, characterized by a sudden release of water from glacial lakes, has destroyed entire villages and overwhelmed local infrastructure.

## Causes

Initially thought to be triggered by an earthquake, further analysis by the US Geological Survey revealed that the event was caused by a glacial collapse and debris flow. This type of disaster, known as a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), is becoming more frequent due to climate change, which is causing glaciers to melt and retreat.

## Expert Insights

Dorothy Heinrich from the University of Reading highlights the increasing risks of such events in the Himalayas due to global warming. These risks include more frequent heatwaves and reduced permafrost, which can lead to landslides and GLOFs. Attribution studies are used to determine the link between specific events and climate change.

## Challenges in Prediction

The lack of rainfall prior to the event rendered existing flood warning systems ineffective, as noted by hydrologist Hatim Sharif. The rapid onset of the flood left little time for evacuation, emphasizing the need for improved early warning systems.

## Future Risks

Qianggong Zhang from ICIMOD warns of the potential for further flooding due to ongoing blockages upstream. Long-term solutions may involve installing river level gauges to provide real-time data and early warnings to residents.
