## Massive Raids Target Food Adulteration

In a significant move against food adulteration, IAS officer Dr. Roshan Jacob has spearheaded a large-scale enforcement campaign in Uttar Pradesh. As the Commissioner of the Food Safety and Drug Administration, Jacob has led efforts to combat the adulteration of various food products, including milk, paneer, ghee, and edible oils.

## Extensive Inspections and Seizures

The operation involved 3,537 inspections and 2,075 raids, resulting in the collection of 2,965 samples for testing. Authorities seized food products worth Rs 11.66 crore and destroyed unsafe items valued at Rs 63.17 lakh. Six FIRs were filed against alleged offenders.

## Focus on Dairy Products

Dairy products were a primary focus, with 572 raids conducted. Officials seized 1,876.66 quintals of milk and dairy products worth Rs 10.66 crore, destroying adulterated items valued at Rs 30.44 lakh. The crackdown also targeted packaged drinking water, leading to the suspension of 41 licenses and the sealing of 57 units.

## Contaminated Products and Legal Actions

Inspections revealed harmful substances like detergents and hydrogen peroxide in some dairy operations. Jacob has ordered the seizure and destruction of contaminated products, with potential closures and criminal cases for violators. The department is considering publicly naming food adulterators to enhance accountability.

## Jacob's Background and Approach

Roshan Jacob, a 2004-batch IAS officer, has served in various districts of Uttar Pradesh and was the first woman director of the state's mining department. Her hands-on approach during the Covid-19 pandemic in Lucknow has further solidified her reputation as a decisive and effective leader in public service.
