Indian Railways doubles littering penalty to Rs 1,000: What can get you fined?

## New Penalty for Cleanliness Violations

Indian Railways has raised the fine for littering and other cleanliness violations from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000. This change, effective from August 25, 2026, aims to enhance cleanliness across trains, stations, and railway properties.

## Activities Leading to Fines

The updated rules penalize a range of activities that compromise cleanliness. These include littering, spitting, urinating, and defecating outside designated areas. Additionally, cooking, bathing, and washing clothes or utensils in unauthorized places are prohibited. Defacing railway property by pasting posters or writing without permission is also a violation.

## Consequences of Non-Payment

Failure to pay the Rs 1,000 fine can lead to more severe consequences. Offenders may be taken to court, where they could face fines up to Rs 2,000.

## Enforcement and Responsibilities

Designated railway officials, including Station Masters and Managers, are authorized to enforce these rules. Vendors and hawkers at railway premises must also adhere to cleanliness standards by providing waste disposal options and ensuring proper waste management.
