Donald Trump announces new US 'Space Academy'

## New Space Academy Announcement

On August 28, 2026, President Donald Trump announced the establishment of a new "Space Academy" at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The academy aims to train both civilian and military recruits, preparing them for strategic roles in space exploration and defense.

## Modeled After West Point

The new institution will be modeled on the prestigious US military academy at West Point. It is designed to support the United States Space Force, NASA, and the civilian spaceflight industry by attracting and training top talent from across the nation.

## Strategic Space Rivalry

The creation of the Space Academy comes amid growing competition with China in space exploration. The US is striving to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030, continuing its legacy of lunar exploration.

## Honors and Future Plans

During the announcement, Trump also awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the crew of NASA's Artemis 2 mission, which recently completed a lunar flyby. The president emphasized a "golden age" of space exploration, with plans to increase missions to Mars and the Moon.
