Donald Trump announces new US 'Space Academy'

## New Space Academy Announcement

On August 28, 2026, President Donald Trump announced the establishment of a new "Space Academy" at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The academy aims to train both civilian and military recruits for roles in the United States Space Force and NASA.

## Strategic Space Rivalry

The initiative comes as the US faces increasing competition from China in space exploration and military capabilities. The academy is expected to be modeled after the prestigious US military academy at West Point.

## Focus on Excellence

Trump emphasized that the academy will attract and train top talent from across the nation, serving the needs of both the Space Force and the civilian spaceflight industry.

## Honors and Future Plans

During the announcement, Trump also awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the crew of NASA's Artemis 2 mission. The mission, which took place in April, involved a flyby of the moon.

## Vision for Space Exploration

The president reiterated his vision for a "golden age" of space exploration, with plans to increase rocket launches to destinations like Mars and the Moon. The US is actively working to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030, continuing its legacy in space exploration.
