US to allow online passport renewal for citizens living abroad

## New Online Passport Renewal Initiative

The US State Department is planning to introduce an online passport renewal service for American citizens living overseas. This initiative aims to simplify the renewal process by allowing eligible individuals to complete the entire procedure online, eliminating the need for in-person visits to embassies or consulates.

## Implementation and Eligibility

The proposed rule, published recently, suggests a phased rollout of the service, with a list of participating countries to be updated on the State Department's travel website. While the specific countries for the initial phase haven't been disclosed, the service could potentially benefit Americans residing in India once implemented.

Eligible applicants will be able to submit their applications, pay fees, and upload passport photos online. The new system will also remove the requirement for the most recent passport to have less than a year of validity for online renewal. Instead, the validity requirement will be specified on the department's website.

## Expected Benefits

The department estimates that this expansion could add approximately 220,000 users to the online platform by 2027, streamlining the process and reducing the workload on consular offices. It is projected that 60% of the 10.51 million passport renewals expected in the fiscal year will be submitted online.

Applicants will still need to meet certain criteria, such as having a previous passport valid for 10 years and issued at age 16 or older. Passports reported lost or stolen, or those issued over 15 years ago, will not qualify for online renewal.

## Cost and Time Savings

The online renewal process is expected to save applicants money on photographs, postage, and travel expenses. The State Department estimates annual savings of nearly $148.7 million from these reductions. Additionally, it could save overseas applicants about four hours of work time typically lost during consular visits, translating to an estimated $18.8 million in avoided wage loss annually.
