Ecuador ex-president sentenced to 5 years for corruption

## Court Ruling

Former Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno has been sentenced to five years in prison for corruption related to the Coca Codo Sinclair dam project. The court found him guilty of accepting bribes from Sinohydro, the Chinese company responsible for constructing the dam.

## Background

Moreno, who served as president from 2017 to 2021, was implicated along with 19 others in the corruption case. The alleged offenses occurred during his tenure as vice-president under Rafael Correa, between 2007 and 2013. Moreno had a political fallout with Correa after shifting his political stance.

## Appeal Plans

Following the court's decision, Moreno announced his intention to appeal. He maintains his innocence, claiming he never received any money from Sinohydro and attributing the charges to political retaliation by Correa, who is also convicted of corruption and currently resides in Belgium.

## Additional Sentences

Moreno's wife and other family members received nearly three-year sentences for their involvement. Prosecutors had initially sought a longer sentence of six and a half years for Moreno.

## Financial Details

The prosecution revealed that Sinohydro paid $76 million in bribes, which constituted about four percent of the dam's total cost. Two former managers of the power plant were also convicted in the case.
