Nepal-China Himalayan flood disaster: More than 2,400 missing as search operations widen

## Search Efforts Intensify

Rescue teams in Nepal and China are working tirelessly to locate over 2,400 individuals missing after a catastrophic flood swept through the Himalayan region. The disaster, resembling a tsunami, has devastated villages and left many areas in ruins.

## Rising Casualties

As of Friday, 586 bodies have been recovered, with some found as far away as India. The missing include trekkers, pilgrims, and 933 hydropower workers. Survivors face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from scratch.

## Ongoing Challenges

The Red Cross estimates that up to 93,000 people have been affected by the disaster. Rescuers are racing against time to find survivors, but fears of further flooding complicate efforts. A burst dam on the Tibetan side has heightened these concerns.

## Rescue Operations

In Tibet, rescue operations were temporarily halted due to flood risks but have since resumed. Two villagers were rescued in Gyirong, one of the hardest-hit areas. Meanwhile, in Nepal, efforts continue to rescue those trapped in the Trishuli 3A hydropower project tunnel.

## International Impact

The disaster has also affected India, where authorities have recovered seven bodies believed to be flood victims. In Tibet, seven people have died, and 554 remain missing. Authorities have evacuated hundreds of tourists and residents from the region.

## Pilgrimage Interrupted

Many of the missing were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Pilgrims, including international devotees, were caught off guard by the sudden flood, with some narrowly escaping by climbing to higher ground.
