‘Aishwarya was cosmetic’: Subhash Ghai recalls casting her in Taal

## Initial Doubts and Saroj Khan's Influence

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai recently shared insights into casting Aishwarya Rai for the lead role in his 1999 film "Taal." Initially, Ghai was unsure about Rai's suitability for the role of Mansi, a character requiring strong dance skills. He associated her more with her Miss World title and modeling background. However, it was the late choreographer Saroj Khan who recommended Rai, convincing Ghai to reconsider.

## The Turning Point

Ghai's perspective shifted after watching Rai's performance in the Tamil film "Iruvar," directed by Mani Ratnam. A friend suggested the film, and after viewing it, Ghai realized Rai's potential as an actress. He arranged a trial with Ratnam's help and decided she was perfect for "Taal."

## A New Image for Aishwarya

To break away from her glamorous image, Ghai requested Rai to appear without makeup in the film's opening scenes. She agreed, embracing the director's vision for her character.

## Success and Future Plans

"Taal," featuring Aishwarya Rai alongside Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna, became a commercial success, celebrated for its music and dance sequences. Ghai has also mentioned that a sequel, "Taal 2," is in the works, though he emphasizes it should not rely solely on star power.
