## Gulf Oil Flows Recover
Iran's strategic advantage in the Strait of Hormuz is diminishing as oil flows through the Gulf have rebounded significantly. Recent estimates suggest that oil exports have increased from a low of 5-6 million barrels per day in March to 15-16 million barrels, nearing pre-conflict levels. This recovery is largely due to U.S. efforts to secure shipping lanes and protect commercial vessels.
## Tehran's Options
With its leverage waning, Iran faces tough choices. One option is to escalate tensions by targeting commercial vessels or deploying mines, drones, and missiles to disrupt the Strait. However, such actions could provoke a strong military response from the U.S., which has increased its presence in the region.
Another strategy could involve shifting pressure to other areas, such as supporting Houthi militants in Yemen to threaten shipping routes through the Red Sea. However, this could lead to further U.S. military intervention and strain relations with Gulf states.
## Diplomatic Path
Diplomacy remains a potential avenue for Iran. Oman, Pakistan, and Qatar have been involved in discussions to resolve the conflict. However, the U.S. appears content to maintain economic pressure, with President Trump showing little urgency to negotiate.
## Economic Strain
Iran's economy is under severe strain, with inflation soaring and foreign trade plummeting. As commercial traffic through Hormuz normalizes while Iranian exports remain restricted, Tehran's bargaining power diminishes. The strategic question now is whether Iran will escalate the conflict or seek negotiations from a weaker position.
