## New Safety Feature for Parents
Instagram is launching a new feature to alert parents when their teenagers repeatedly search for content related to suicide or self-harm. This initiative is part of Meta's efforts to enhance parental supervision and address mental health risks among young users.
## How It Works
The alert system will notify parents through email, WhatsApp, or in-app messages if their teen frequently searches for concerning terms within a short timeframe. These notifications will also provide resources to help families manage mental health issues.
## Building on Existing Safeguards
This new feature complements existing measures that block or limit access to harmful content and redirect users to support services. By involving parents directly, Instagram aims to identify and respond to risky behavior patterns more effectively.
## Initial Rollout
The feature will initially be available in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. It applies only to accounts with parental supervision settings enabled.
## Part of a Broader Trend
This move is part of a larger trend towards using AI-driven tools for safety on social media platforms. Meta and other tech companies are increasingly implementing automated systems to monitor and intervene in potentially dangerous online activities, responding to global calls for stronger protections for minors.
