Dutch shift 86 tonnes of gold from US, Canada to UK due to 'geopolitical unrest'

## Gold Transfer to London

The Dutch central bank has relocated 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London. This move is in response to rising geopolitical tensions, aiming to enhance the deployability of their reserves.

## Strategic Shift

The decision to store more gold in London is based on its market's liquidity, making it easier to trade in times of crisis. Previously, a significant portion of the Dutch gold was stored in New York and Ottawa, but now the share in London has increased significantly.

## Current Gold Holdings

As of the end of 2025, the Netherlands' total gold reserves stood at 612.4 tonnes, valued at approximately 72.2 billion euros. The recent transfer has adjusted the distribution of these reserves, with London now holding 32.1% of the total.

## Transfer Details

The operation involved both buying and selling, as well as physically moving gold. This approach was taken to mitigate risks associated with transporting large quantities of gold. The transfer process occurred between March and August of this year.

## Market Reactions

Experts note that central banks have been shifting reserves for years, with London's market being a preferred choice due to its depth and liquidity. While this move by the Dutch is currently isolated, there are concerns about potential impacts on confidence in the US if other banks follow suit.
