## Preparing for Unconventional Accommodation

Indian athletes are undergoing a unique preparation for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan by spending nights in converted shipping containers. This initiative is in response to the accommodation plans for the Games, where athletes will be housed in hotels, a cruise ship, and temporary container units instead of a traditional athletes' village.

## Training in Patiala and Bengaluru

The Sports Authority of India has set up these containers at training centers in Patiala and Bengaluru. Athletes are rotating through these spaces, which are equipped with beds, air conditioning, bathrooms, and small kitchen areas, to simulate the conditions they will face in Japan.

## Adapting to Limited Space

Adjusting to the confined space has been challenging for some athletes. Discus thrower Seema Kaliraman found it difficult initially but adapted over time. Shot put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who is notably tall, noted the space constraints but acknowledged that this experience will ease the transition in Japan.

## Cultural and Culinary Familiarization

In addition to accommodation, athletes are also being introduced to Japanese cuisine, including sushi, to familiarize them with the food they might encounter during the Games. This comprehensive preparation aims to minimize distractions and help athletes focus on their performance.

## Looking Ahead to the Games

The 2026 Asian Games will be held in Aichi Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. India aims to surpass its previous record of 107 medals, including 28 golds, achieved in Hangzhou. By acclimating athletes to the living conditions and cuisine, India hopes to enhance their performance at this major sporting event.
