From family holiday to rescue mission: Abu Dhabi-based Nepali referee recounts flood ordeal

## Unexpected Turn of Events

Jagan Adhikari, a Nepali referee based in Abu Dhabi, embarked on a family trip to Nepal, intending to spend quality time with his relatives. However, the vacation took an unexpected turn when severe floods hit the region. On August 26, Adhikari received a call warning him of the impending disaster in Rasuwa, which was heading towards Trishuli, where his in-laws reside.

## Family in Crisis

Initially skeptical about the severity, Adhikari soon realized the gravity of the situation when his wife's sister informed them that her daughter and in-laws were caught in the flood, and their home was destroyed. The family faced a tense wait, struggling to contact loved ones due to disrupted communication networks.

## Rescue Efforts

Adhikari witnessed helicopters rescuing stranded individuals and decided to assist by reaching out to contacts who could help. He managed to connect with the personal secretary of Nepal's Minister for Communications, facilitating the evacuation of trapped individuals by the Nepal army.

## Community Support

In the aftermath, Adhikari and others used phones to coordinate relief efforts, identifying those in need of evacuation, food, or shelter. Despite the challenges, the community came together, with volunteers and officials working tirelessly to provide aid.

## Personal Reflections

Adhikari, who has been involved in community activities in the UAE, reflected on the importance of helping others during crises. The experience reinforced his belief in the value of human life over material possessions. Despite the devastation, he remains committed to assisting where possible, emphasizing that while homes can be rebuilt, lives cannot be replaced.
